Acne Back

Acne on your back is one of the most common conditions we see in our clinic. If your acne is making you feel self-conscious, or if breakouts are causing you pain, then our range of treatments can leave your skin feeling soothed and you feeling confident by tackling the acne at its source.

What is acne?
There are two types of acne: inflammatory and non-inflammatory.

Non-inflammatory acne occurs when oil and dead cells clog the pores in your skin. This causes blackheads or whiteheads to develop, which tends to be painless, whereas inflammatory acne can be much more painful. Inflammatory breakouts tend to be red and, in some cases, will have a white “head” to them. Depending on the severity, they may become hard to touch and very tender.

Inflammatory acne can be sore and as we’ve heard from people we’ve treated, can make people feel self-conscious. It can also leave permanent scars behind in some cases. Inflammatory acne is caused by the imbalance of androgen and oestrogen hormones. Over-production of the male hormones (androgen) or a reduction in female hormones (oestrogen) causes a surge of production of sebum, which deposits itself into the follicle. Over-the-counter creams don’t usually work in this situation, so alternative treatments such as those that we offer are usually explored.

The severity of each type of acne can differ from person to person, as can the treatment options. Can you find your type using our acne skin checker? This could help you find the right treatment for you, but we will discuss exactly what could work for your acne at your first consultation with us, once we’ve had a chance to review your skin in person.

Acne appears differently for different people, not always breaking out on the face. Some cases might be on the back (bacne) and shoulders, and it may affect you in later life, even though you didn’t suffer as a teenager. Whatever your situation, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, and we’re here to help you find the right solution.

What does acne look like?

What causes acne?

Acne is often associated with oily skin. Oil (sebum) is essential for protecting your skin and keeping it hydrated, but when it’s overproduced, your natural oil can clog your pores with dead skin cells. This creates an environment that allows the bacteria responsible for spots to multiply, therefore blackheads and whiteheads start to appear on your skin’s surface.

There are as many myths about the causes of acne as there are days in a year! So don’t believe everything you read and take the time to speak to a specialist to better understand the causes of your acne and how you can tackle it.

Acne can be brought on by a range of factors including stress, hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy, menopause and oral contraceptives, medication side effects, sweating, excessive oil production, sleep habits and hair and skincare products.

How to manage acne

Getting rid of acne successfully – or even controlling it – will depend on your skin, your lifestyle and the treatment you choose. Generally speaking, you could say goodbye to acne through a combination of the following:

  • Visiting our clinic and talking to an expert
  • Washing your make-up brushes, pillowcases and bed sheets on a regular basis
  • Minimising the stresses and strains in your life
  • Eating a balanced diet and consuming plenty of water
  • Exercising regularly
  • Reviewing your beauty products, i.e. choose the right moisturiser for your skin type
  • For women, consider another form of contraception
  • Don’t squeeze your spots!
